Skincare and Selfcare

Beauty | Skincare and self care, How you can use skincare to enhance your wellbeing.

By Emily Guerin

Lets talk about skin! How many of you actually look after your skin? Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in our body. So many of us neglect our skin or just don’t know the importance of a good skincare routine.

Skincare is such a big important factor to our wellbeing and selfcare. When your skin is radiant and glowing you feel amazing. Over the years I have had my very own battles with my skin, when I was 15 years old I started with acne. It really lowered my confidence and self-esteem, back then I didn’t really know how to treat my skin. I would buy supermarket acne products that would strip my skins barrier and leave my skin dry, flaky and still spotty.
The answer back then was to have medication to treat the problem.
If only I had known how to have a good skincare routine!

When I started in the beauty industry over 17 years ago I just knew from the moment I starting learning about the skin I just loved it and it has been a passion of mine ever since. I just love how amazing my clients
feel when they have had a facial, that feeling of relaxation with fresh and glowing skin.

Lots of us don’t understand skincare routines, my advice to you is make your skincare routine work for you. Some of us may have a skincare routine that last a few minutes a day, others may take longer. That’s what I love about routines its can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. It has taken me years to perfect my routine and I do change mine during the seasons and to suit any skin concerns I may have at the time. If you currently do not have a daily routine then you need to start off simple with a good cleansing routine and moisturiser to get you started.

Do your research! There are so many different products on the market that it can be overwhelming. The best thing to do is to book a consultation with a skincare specialist and they can help you find the right products for your skin and give you advice on how to start your routine. Once you find your perfect routine it will become part of your everyday rituals and you wont be able to live without it.

I just love that feeling of fresh skin, when my skin feels and looks amazing I feel confident and happy. It has taken me a long time to feel that way after suffering for many years with my skin.

Best skin care products

So lets talk about products and where and when to use them.

We should always start our daily skincare routine by cleansing. This would be done morning and evening. In the morning we still need to cleanse when we get up, most of us think well I cleansed before bed and I’ve only been sleeping. We still get a build up of bacteria and oils on our skin when we sleep so start the day with a nice cleanse of your skin. In the evening we need to double cleanse the skin. Start by cleansing off your makeup and eye makeup and then following with another cleanse to ensure all our makeup and built up bacteria is thoroughly removed.
Find a cleanser that suits you and your lifestyle there are lots of cleansers on the market including cream, foam, gel, oil and waters.

Secondly we need to tone our skin. Toning our skin helps removes any excess products after cleansing and it also helps the balance our skins natural barrier. This would be done morning and evening after cleansing. You apply toner with cotton pads and gently wipe all over you’re your face and neck avoiding the eye area.

Exfoliating, be honest how many of you do this? This is a very important part of your skincare routine and should be done 2/3 times a week depending on your skin type. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, brings fresh nutrients to the surface of the skin, helps with the aging process and leaves your skin feeling fresh. Without exfoliating our moisturisers and serums fed the dead skin cells and don’t actually do anything for our skin.Remember this vital step of your routine to get the full benefit of your moisturisers.

There are lots of different types of exfoliators on the market to choose from my favourite are the enzyme exfoliators.

Lastly moisturise your skin morning and evening. Moisturising helps protect our skins barrier and treat the concerns that we may have with our skin. It is important that we find the correct moisturiser for our skin type and concerns. Research what moisturiser is best for you and have a skin consultation with a skin specialist. Remember to apply your SPF daily after you have moisturized even when it’s not sunny, its is so important that you protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays form the sun. These rays are what causes the damage to our skin
such as aging, pigmentation and sun damage.

Just remember don’t overwhelm yourself find a skincare routine that suit you and one last thing to take away with you is too just love the skin your in.
